Spirit Halloween Costumes: 7 Checks Before You Buy in 2026

9-minute read · U.S. shopping guide · Policies checked September 22, 2026

Before buying a Spirit Halloween costume, check the return deadline, the size chart and exactly what comes in the package. Then work out whether the complete outfit will arrive in time and feel comfortable at your event.

A costume can look finished in the photo while still leaving you to find shoes, a wig or somewhere to put your phone. This guide helps you catch those details before paying, whether you are visiting a store or ordering online.

1. What is Spirit Halloween’s return policy in 2026?

These are the published 2026 dates for in-store purchases and eligible online orders taken to a store:

Spirit Halloween’s dated 2026 in-store policy
Date What the policy allows
Through October 16 Returns and exchanges, subject to the item conditions.
October 17–22 Exchanges; the refund deadline has passed.
After October 22 In-store sales are final.

Bring your receipt. Items must be unworn, resalable and in their original packaging with the original accessories.

Mailing an online return? Separate 14-day terms and a seasonal cutoff apply. The dated FAQ says to postmark before October 16, 2026; an undated section lists a different date. Confirm with Guest Services before mailing near the cutoff.

Check the official return policy for the full conditions and item exclusions.

Put the relevant deadline in your calendar when you buy. Keep all the packaging together until you have checked the outfit, rather than discovering a missing piece while getting ready for the party.

2. Do Spirit Halloween costumes run small?

Spirit’s product guidance says most costumes run smaller than standard clothing sizes and recommends the larger size if you are between sizes. Use the chart for the exact costume, though: a size label alone cannot tell you how a different cut or material will fit. See Spirit’s costume sizing guidance.

Take the measurements the chart asks for before choosing a size. For a fitted outfit, compare your chest or bust, waist and hips. For a jumpsuit, pay attention to height and any torso or inseam measurements provided.

  • Read the chart labels. Body measurements and measurements of a garment laid flat are different. Follow the method the seller specifies.
  • Allow for your actual outfit. If you will wear a layer underneath, measure with that layer on when the chart calls for body measurements.
  • Check the closure. A fitted zipper, stretch waistband and tie fastening give you different amounts of adjustment.
  • Check each part of a set. If the top fits but the trousers do not, the costume still needs a solution.

If your measurements fall across several sizes, ask about the exact garment instead of hoping the fabric will stretch. Keep a note of the product name and your measurements so you can get a specific answer.

3. Does the costume include everything in the photo?

Use the written contents list to decide what you are buying. Do not assume shoes, hosiery, wigs, props or jewelry are included just because the model is wearing them.

Make three short lists on your phone:

  • Included: every piece named on the package or product page.
  • Already owned: shoes, clothing and accessories you can use with it.
  • Still needed: only the pieces necessary for the outfit you want.

For example, a witch costume might be complete enough with a dress, hat and your own boots. You may like the photographed broom and wig, but decide whether you want to carry or wear them for the whole event before adding them.

Once the order arrives, compare its contents with the written list. If something is missing or damaged, photograph it and contact the retailer promptly. Check the package before starting alterations.

4. Is your size available at the store you plan to visit?

Check the exact costume, color and size for the location you intend to visit. A general product listing is not enough to establish that a particular branch has the version you need.

If you are making a special trip, note the product name or item number and confirm availability with that location. Ask about the specific size rather than asking whether the store has, for example, “vampire costumes.”

Have one acceptable backup before you leave. That could be another costume in your size, or an outfit built from clothes you own. A backup makes it easier to walk away from something uncomfortable instead of buying it because you have already made the trip.

5. Will pickup or delivery leave time to check the outfit?

For in-store pickup

Spirit offers free pickup at participating stores. Wait for the email saying your order is ready before going; an order confirmation is not the same thing. Orders placed at closing or while the store is closed are processed the next day.

Bring a photo ID and the order number, and follow the collection deadline in your message. Spirit explains the process in its pickup information.

For home delivery

Use the estimated delivery date for your destination at checkout. Spirit’s shipping guidance distinguishes processing from transit time and says delivery dates are estimates, not guarantees.

Work backward from the day you need the outfit, allowing time to inspect the contents and check the fit. An arrival estimate on the morning of your event leaves little room to fix a problem.

If you need a costume today, focus on something you can actually collect or assemble today. A faster shipping label is not a substitute for a confirmed arrival date.

6. Can you sit, walk and carry your essentials in it?

Think through the event before choosing the costume. A seated dinner, a crowded party and an outdoor evening call for different things.

  • Movement: consider stairs, sitting down, reaching overhead and using the bathroom.
  • Temperature: decide where your jacket will go and whether you need a layer underneath.
  • Shoes: choose a pair you can wear for the amount of walking planned.
  • Essentials: plan space for your phone, keys, payment card and anything else you need to carry.
  • Event rules: check restrictions on bags, masks and costume props before buying them.

A five-minute check at home can reveal that a cape catches under a chair, gloves make your phone hard to use, or the outfit has no pockets. Try the complete combination while there is still time to adjust your plan.

7. What will the complete Halloween outfit cost?

The costume’s price is only one part of the decision. Add necessary accessories, delivery and tax before deciding whether the outfit fits your budget.

A simple way to compare two costume ideas
Cost to check Question to answer
Main outfit What is the current price for the size and version I need?
Missing pieces Which accessories are essential, and which can I borrow or reuse?
Getting it here What will delivery or the collection trip add?
Final checkout What is the actual total after tax and any valid discount?

Illustrative example: a $35 costume plus $15 of necessary accessories costs more before tax and delivery than a $45 outfit that needs nothing else. Use your real totals; those figures are not current Spirit Halloween prices.

For a casual Halloween gathering, it may be enough to wear your own clothes with one themed piece. Decide how dressed up you want to be before shopping so a small plan does not become a full costume by accident.

Three optional additions from Let There Be Cute

If your list has a specific gap, these picks from our store serve three different purposes: carrying essentials, finishing a cat outfit or keeping a casual Halloween look simple. They are separate Let There Be Cute purchases, not Spirit Halloween merchandise.

Check current availability, sizing and delivery estimates on each product page. Choose an item because it works for your outfit; there is no need to buy all three.

Common Spirit Halloween shopping questions

Can I return a Spirit Halloween online order in store?

Eligible online orders can be returned in store within the seasonal policy. Bring the receipt or invoice and check the dates and item conditions above.

Should I order two costume sizes and return one?

Check your measurements first. Ordering two sizes ties up more money and creates another task. Only use that approach after confirming that your particular order would qualify for a return and that you have time to complete it.

Does an order confirmation mean my costume is ready for pickup?

No. Wait for the separate ready-for-pickup message. Keep it accessible on your phone along with the order number before setting off.

Is the store called Halloween Spirit or Spirit Halloween?

The retailer’s name is Spirit Halloween. If you searched for “Halloween Spirit” while looking for the costume store, that is the name to use when checking its locations, orders and policies.

Save this checklist before you shop

Copy these seven lines into a phone note, then fill them in for the costume you are considering:

  1. My event date and the date I need the outfit at home.
  2. The return deadline and conditions for this purchase.
  3. My measurements and the exact size I need.
  4. The included pieces and anything still missing.
  5. The confirmed collection plan or delivery estimate.
  6. My shoes, weather layer and place for essentials.
  7. The complete outfit total, including extras.

Once those answers work, you can choose the costume you actually like with fewer loose ends to sort out on the day.
